PROPELLER SHAFT JOINTS - 'SS{S. Smith}'. X 7340 It will be essential that the propeller shaft joints on the SS.{S. Smith} are made absolutely oil retaining. The rest of the car will be oiled by means of the central oiling scheme which will leave the two universal joints the only parts to be hand-oiled. We are relying on these joints holding the oil and not needing any replenishment for 5000 to 10,000 miles. We have carried out tests and have run 10,000 miles without adding any oil. It will be realised however that if there is the least leakage from these joints they will very soon become dry and wear out. We recommend that on production there should be a test on which the propeller shaft and joints are revolved at 3,000 mk revs. per min. for a short time and the joints should be checked to make sure they are oil retaining.
