Alfa Romeo. The 20 HP. for these tests was a covered car with 4 passengers. The Alfa Romeo, open touring with driver only. We attach herewith tests which were carried out on the cars on the Col de la{L. A. Archer} Faucille. It will be observed that the displacement of the two cars is almost identical, also the radiator face areas, the R-R is rather a greater depth than the other. The Alfa Romeo was provided with 4-speed gearbox which enabled it to climb a hill at a speed of 31 m.p.h. as opposed to covered car climbing at 21 m.p.h. In addition it had very little weight to carry, it being impossible to ballast a new car about to be delivered. We have compared the radiators on a basis of 1000 litres displacement per ton mile on top gear, to allow for the different conditions of the cars during the tests; we assume the respective gears on which the hill was climbed would be in much the same ratio as the direct drives. On two of the corners with the Alfa Romeo it was necessary to drop to second gear - full throttle was used on both cars. In the circumstances we do not think the Alfa Romeo shews up particularly well. Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} | ||
