To HS.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} & DA.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design} from E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} -2- E4/G31/3/21 Contd.

(3) 40/50 H.P. INSTRUMENT BOARD.

Countersunk screws with spherical faces should be used for fixing all instruments to the instrument board, in accordance with Mr. Royce's wishes.
Mr. Hives suggests moving the gauge light one space to the left from the position it occupies on chassis 6 EX. so as to illuminate all of the dials, and Mr. Royce agrees.

(4) 40/50 H.P. BACK AXLE.

It was intended by Mr. Royce that the 3.5 ratio should be used for cars of standard loading, and the 3.75 ratio for heavy cars. It was intended further, that the three speed box should be used with the low geared back axle only.

(5) 40/50 H.P. MOULDED INSULATION. x2434 x800 x8573 x2738 x3974

Mr. Royce suggests ordering the 40/50 H.P. coil box from the States while we are waiting to start a supply in England. 40/50 H.P. distributor cover and other moulded parts Mr. Royce thinks could be made in black bakelite, but the cover should be altered from a flat to a spherical design with moulded bosses before making dies, so that it is impossible for water to accumulate and cause shorting. Mr. Royce wishes to know where we are trying to get porcelain insulation from, and stated that Bullers and Doulton were the well known firms for this class of work, also French manufacturers of cooking utensils, as suggested in another memo.

(6) 40/50 H.P. REAR SHOCK DAMPERS.

Where these are to be fitted it is proposed to make standard bronze and steel plates of the progressive type.

(7) 40/50 H.P. CHASSIS RUNNING BOARD SUPPORTS.

Mr. Royce agrees to moving the running board supports back, the rear set nearer the back wheel and the front set nearer the spare wheel.

(8) "GOSHAWK I AND II" SHOCK DAMPERS.

The 40/50 H.P. front shock dampers should be used for the "Goshawk I & II" on both back and front axles, unless it is found necessary to fit progressive type to the back.

(9) "GOSHAWK I" BODY.

The steering on "Goshawk I" chassis should be altered to "Goshawk II" "D" type and a body should be fitted with the seating accommodation recommended for "Goshawk II". This should be obtained as quickly as possible in whatever manner possible. It is more important that the body should be of the right shape than it should be smart. We are now suggesting comfortable and correct body of eggbox quality made at Derby from W.W. particulars.
