COPY OF LETTER FROM:- PETO AND RADFORD., 50, GROSVENOR GARDENS, LONDON. S.W.1. Your Ref. Wd{Mr Wood/Mr Whitehead}14/NJ8126. Our Ref. WP/HA 131. January 13th 1926. Messrs. Rolls-Royce Limited., Nightingale Road, DERBY. Dear Sirs, In reply to your letter of the 8th instant, we would like to point out that should you desire to adopt threaded rubber separators for your standard accumulators we should have no difficulty whatever in supplying them. These separators are, as you no doubt know, the original Willard Separator introduced many years ago. They are probably quite as good, and in some cases, better than wood separators, or possibly a combination of wood and ebonite separation. As a starter accumulator has to be a compromise between electrical and mechanical efficiency and the necessity of dimensions, weight and output have to be considered, you have to regard the separator not only as a means of keeping the plates apart but as a possible means of introducing high internal resistance. We would like to point out, however, that with these particular separators the chief objection lies in the fact that when the acid level falls below the plates the exposed portion oxidizes and eventually perishes. Extreme brittleness also occurs after a few months immersion in acid rendering them very delicate. Possibly with an accumulator such as is built for the Rolls-Royce Company this may not be serious and it is of course, obvious that this could not occur in laboratory tests where everything is carefully watched, but out on the - contd - | ||
