HYDRAULIC SHOCK DAMPERS.
--------------------

In order that you may understand the position as we view it at Derby at the moment, I am summarising the matter as follows:-

The modifications you sent through on N.Scheme 2145 were finished off and instructed to the Works, a week ago.

We are so full up with pattern work that this work had to be undertaken outside, and the best promise we can get is three weeks for the pattern, which is of course rather a complicated piece.

In view of this date, and since we are ready to instruct the new shock damper based on N.Scheme 2153, but working to the old piston dimensions, I have instructed them to stop work on the intermediate scheme from N.Scheme 2145, and go ahead on the scheme we have produced based on N.Scheme 2153.

We know there are certain other modifications which you propose to send along, and we would also like to remark that we are not quite clear whether we are to go ahead with the smaller diameter piston or not.

We are under the impression that you have not received confirmation from R. {Sir Henry Royce} that he is in agreement with the reduction, and I take it that there is no very special reason for suddenly reducing the piston at this particular juncture.

We notice from Rl/M.5.3.26. that R. {Sir Henry Royce} is making certain other proposals. Just what it will be considered necessary to do by yourself and Hs. {Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} I do not know, but it seems evident to me we shall have to go ahead on production on the scheme we are just instructing, as if we continue to alter indefinitely there is no prospect of us finishing off the schemes and getting into production within the three months which have been specified by CJ. Of course if troubles arise, then they must be cleared up, but so far as I can see the scheme we are about to instruct should overcome most of the troubles that the Experimental Dept. arestruggling with.

I have just talked the matter over with Hs. {Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} who agrees with me that the improved damper based on N.Scheme 2153 covers all his difficulties up to the
