It having been decided to make an exhaustive test to decide whether the tests recently established at "W" for proving the absence of over-oiling were satisfactory and sufficiently positive, 'New PhantomCodename for PHANTOM I' chassis No.114-RC{R. Childs} has been run in London at slow speed for nine days. The test consisted of running this chassis about London at a speed not exceeding 25 m.p.h. at any time, with at least two stops during the day of fifteen minutes, during which the engine was left running. The sparking plugs were examined at the end of each of these periods of running light. The chassis passed these tests satisfactorily. At the close of this test, the chassis was given a hard run of twenty-five miles and after completion of this the condition of the sparking plugs was found to be good; all of them being perfectly dry. The oil on the cylinder walls was not excessive and generally the cylinders were in good condition. The detailed log of the test is attached. In view of the fact that the conditions of the sparking plugs of this car were found to be reasonably consistent throughout the run, the tests established at "W" would seem to be satisfactory, but it is considered desirable to repeat this test on two other chassis, running each for three days only under similar conditions, in order to broaden the basis of proof. Arrangements are being made to obtain two further chassis which can be spared to carry out these further tests. It has been noticed from the condition of the sparking plugs during this running that the mixture in No.5. cylinder and to slightly lesser degree in No.2. cylinder appeared to be always | ||
