X.4247. To HS.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} & EY. FROM R.{Sir Henry Royce} c. to CJ. BJ. Wor.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} FN. RE. 4-SPEED GEARBOX FOR GOSHAWK II. X.4247. Though I am still in favour of a central change three speed box for this Goshawk chassis, for my own personal use, Mr. Stent and I have been able to achieve the following results :- The new 4 speed box, although having an extra speed and the servo drive, has been got in within the dimensions of the present 3 speed box. This we look upon as an achievement which, considering the type of box (sliding gears) has not been done before. In addition to this we have been able to provide a sliding reverse in place of the more usual eccentric device usually fitted to 4 speed boxes. So that although the box is somewhat more complicated than a 3 speed box, some of the defects of the four speed lever have been got over. Should however the central change speed lever be retained, or sometimes demanded for this chassis, it should be remembered that to make a clean and simple job, a 3 speed box is highly desirable, and we think that it would be as well, as soon as we are able, to produce or modify the design of the 3 speed box for the servo drive, so that we can still have this arrangement as an alternative, should a buyer prefer it. In the 4 speed box we have modified the design so that the floorboards can be made suitable for the pedals to be nearer the dash, and so save between 1" and 2" in the front seating dimensions.
