pipe from the manifold to the front expansion box instead of the 3" dia. down pipe. In this case there was a power loss with 'cut out closed' as well as cut-out open. The results are shewn on print V.767. By the appearance on the test bed the larger dia. down pipe (3") runs cooler than the 2½" pipe.

For our tests on the bench we cooled the alum expan. box and cast alum front end of the silencer by means of a water spray but even then the interior part of this front end - the alum part which carries the cut out butterfly - melted away at some of the spokes - see accompanying sketch. The outer ring also became somewhat plastic.

We do not know that the conditions will be so severe on the road - we do not think so in this country - but on the Continent we may reach similar temperatures. Also these cars have to go through the production dynamometer test where there is little or no cooling.

We intend to run this system on the next 10,000 miles car in France.
