To CJ. from R.{Sir Henry Royce} c.c. to BJ. c.c. to Wor.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} c.c. to Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} c.c. to EP.{G. Eric Platford - Chief Quality Engineer} X3730 R3/9.1.22. GOSHAWK 11. X.4219 X.3730 It has occurred to me that it would be a good idea as soon as we can complete a car with a really good looking and comfortable body - to let Messrs. Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} or EP.{G. Eric Platford - Chief Quality Engineer} take it to shew the R.R. Chairman and Directors, and friends who are interested, especially to Mr. Arthur Gibbs, who is anxious that it should be a success. Certainly I should like Mr. de Salamanca to test it and criticise it, but although he is I think a good critic of performance, he quite gets out of his element when writing on design; all the pros. and cons. cannot be considered by his methods, and indeed extremely few could possibly see why we do this and why we do not do that, unless they spent the years that we have spent on this work, and even then two men would never agree. If you knew the process of thought that has brought us from our 40/50 to the simple looking Goshawk 11., you would see how we resent those who criticise the result by the thoughts of a few moments.
