With reference to the replacement of Hall's Aluminium bearings one of the worst troubles is clearly going to be scoring of the shaft. We are trying to get a Standard treatment for shafts which are scored so that when the new bearings are fitted they will have the optimum chance.

The attached memo. indicates our suggestions of how the shafts might be dealt with. I do not know what facilities you have for Nitriding in Paris but I expect these are very good as the scheme more or less originated there.

I am particularly anxious that in order that the White Metal shall have the best possible chance in your Trials car the crankshaft shall be in reasonably good condition when the bearings are fitted.

In order to get the maximum amount of information from your Trials car we should like to fit an oil temperature thermometer in an inconspicuous place and try to bring the oil temperature up to a summer figure by shrouding the crankcase. On a mild winter day when driven continuously at high speeds we should like the oil to reach as a maximum 120°C. We will send the necessary parts out to Hamilton at Chateauroux and when you can spare the car he can fit them up and try to get the oil temperature right for you. Incidentally, this information is so important that if you have any difficulty in covering the necessary number of miles we should like our Chateauroux drivers to help you. We have in mind that we might get the results before Christmas.
