R COMPLAINING TO HS{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} ON FALLING STANDARDS OF WORK & FINISH ON HIS 6EX & 1EX. To Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}, from R.{Sir Henry Royce} Copy to OJr. ✓ WOR.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} ✓ DA.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design} ✓ SY. RPC. ✓ X.3763 X.3923 RE FITTERS' WORK ON 6 EX. COMPARED WITH 1 EX. RECEIVED 25 AUG 1920 I was sorry to find that the fitters' work on chassis 6 EX. appeared to be less finely done than on 1EX. Nearly everything one had to handle was harsh and heavy, especially remarkable were the getting in of the reverse and the priming tap on the dashboard. No doubt these points will improve in use and wear, but we think they ought to be in perfect condition when turned out. The adjustment of one of the valves appeared to be too close, and seemed to affect the evenness of the slow running. The engine, however, was particularly quiet when the clutch was removed, and ran remarkably well when throttled down, so much so that* it was difficult to tell whether the engine was running or not, in the streets of London.* X.1809 The bevel gear of the speed indicator was particularly noisy and I should be glad if you would take this matter up with the makers. A very serious defect was noticed in the slight flooding of the carburettor, due to the want of perfection in the needle valve, which Mr. Elliott thinks has been damaged. It was not due to punctured float or the adjustment of the level, as the floatchamber became quite filled up and the float quite clear of the little lever that controls the needle valve. X.3922 X.3444 In connection with the petrol system, I noticed that on PN{Mr Northey}'s car the hand air pump was particularly hard to work (Contd.) | ||
