Dear Sirs,

We thank you for your letter of the 20th October, together with drawing R.88.

The only criticism we have to offer is that we should not expect to be able to run with this size of piston with a clearance of 5.2 thousands of an inch across the pressure face at the top of the skirt without cold piston knocks.

Another point has arisen since our interview with you; we have been experimenting with anodically treated pistons and have come to the conclusion that this is a very essential development. We should therefore like you to let us know whether you can anodically treat any pistons which you submit to us for test, because we do not wish to do the test twice over, i.e., on the standard piston and on the anodically treated article.

Yours faithfully,

FOR ROLLS-ROYCE LIMITED.
