CHILDS Dear Sirs, In reply to your letter of the 24th instant, you will appreciate that our communication of the 21st crossed yours in which you ordered the instrument. We would like to make clear that we did not insist on an order because the instrument was demonstrated to you. We were satisfied that it had proved suitable for the job, but whether or not an order is placed is, of course, entirely your concern. Our preoccupation in this instance was that the instrument sent to you was the only one available for provincial demonstrations and we therefore could not leave it with you. For this reason we specifically requested you to return it the next day. This would also have avoided a recurrence of the facts which were mentioned to your Mr. Childs at the time.
