17 Sft.{Mr Swift}7/WM.28.5.41. CLAN FOUNDRY AND ENGINE REPAIRS. --------------------------- There are at present approximately 56 Kestrel XXX engines in for conversion and 22 more to come. It is doubtful whether we shall get the whole of these 22, and we have told the Ministry that we want to close the Kestrel XXX conversion job down, and it has been suggested that we should not accept any further engines for conversion after June 30th. The Ministry are prepared to reduce the contract by the number of engines which they are unable to get in by this time, and this will mean that the Kestrel XXX conversion job will be finished some time round about the middle or end of July, and the Kestrel repair job turned over to Alvis, together with all the available jigs and tools. It is suggested that the Clan Foundry should take over the Peregrine repairs on exactly the same lines as at present they are dealing with the Kestrel. Nottingham will accept the engines and deal with them up to the estimating stage and will be responsible for supplying parts to the Clan Foundry. We are also proposing, in addition, that Clan Foundry should take over the work of the Vulture repairs, including the stripping, washing, estimating, etc.. With regard to the estimating side, it is proposed to transfer the requisite number of inspectors and estimators to Clan Foundry, to deal with this job. It will be necessary for the Clan Foundry to hold parts for the Vulture repairs. My reason for this arrangement is that Nottingham, by nature and construction is not suitable for handling Vulture engines. Sft.{Mr Swift} | ||
