PHANTOM III. Petrol Pumps. Thank you for your memo and the .I80 needle valve and seat. We have re-arranged the trial switch to give dash pump, frame pump, or both. We found that maximum speed was limited to 75-80 m.p.h. with the dash pump, even when cool, so that we could not obtain a true comparison for high speed starvation. Since fitting the .I80 needle valve, we can get maximum speed on either pump, so we shall now be able to obtain comparative figures for the pumps at maximum speed. We have reproduced the same figures for starvation after halts with each pump since fitting the larger seat. It has made no noticeable difference with either pump in this respect, and confirmed the marked superiority of the frame pump. No flooding has yet occurred with the .I80 seat and high pressure pumps. We think our trouble in Derby can only have been due to dirt. Bullamore tells us that the carburettor of practically every new chassis has to be dismantled in the Test Department for this reason.
