Phantom III Cylinder Liner Gland Rings.

There are in existence in the works a number of black gland rings E.87743 - "D" quality. These are for the lower gland of the Phantom III cylinder liner, and were made from a mould which produced rings of a volume greater than the limits called for on the drawing. The correct limits are 7.7 to 7.9

The mould has this week been altered so that the volume of any ring produced from it should be within the limits of volume specified. It is very important that none of the incorrect rings should be used in engines and it appears that the only way to accomplish this is to call in all "D" quality rings E.87743 received from The British Tyre and Rubber Co. prior to this date. These rings should be destroyed as they are of no use and their presence can quite easily cause great inconvenience.

With regard to the upper gland ring E.87908 - DTY.10 quality, we have now made arrangements for all future supplies to be coloured pink. This is the only type of ring to be used in future for the upper gland - tests made have shewn that these are of the correct volume and give good results.

With regard to the method employed for checking the volume of rubber rings, we understand from the makers that the water displacement method does not give consistently satisfactory results and they have found it necessary to use methylated spirits instead of water. It would, therefore, appear advisable for us to adopt this method.

The linear dimensions of the ring E.87743, as at present shown on the drawing, are not correct for the limits of volume required,- during inspection, therefore, it is not necessary to insist that the rings are in accordance with the limits of linear dimensions given - the important matter is that the volume should be correct. We propose to obtain from the makers the correct linear dimensions which produce a ring of the required volume and then we shall ask BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} to alter the detail accordingly.
