PHANTOM EXHAUST PIPE AND SILENCER.

We send you herewith drawing LeC.2275 shewing the alterations proposed to overcome the expansion trouble on the Phantom front pipe and silencer.

The sliding joint between the front pipe and silencer has been cancelled as it is considered there is sufficient flexibility to deal with the amount of actual expansion, the trouble being primarily due to the pipe creeping along the sliding fit, and not returning.

At the same time we have taken advantage of these alterations to increase the length of the front silencer, and to give the entry of the rear manifold a curvature in the direction of flow.

We would be glad if you would issue the necessary instructions for testing this scheme with a view to standardisation.

E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer}
