Dear Callingham,

Thank you for your letter of the 28th May.

I am interested in the new oils you are marketing. We are just building our Cold Chamber. I do not wish to use an oil in England which is thinner than is necessary to enable a car to start easily at 0°C. I would, therefore, like to defer further comments on these lubricants until we manage to get tests in our Cold Chamber.

In the meantime, if you will let me have 5 gallons of each grade I will run some bench tests.

I have discussed with Mr. Hives your suggestion of purchasing a car for oil tests. The trouble at present in our organisation is making the best use of the information obtained during the miles which we ourselves run. We also find that unless every test is carried out to an exact schedule, results are not comparable. Therefore, I am afraid that it is not a practical proposition for Shell to run one of our cars in the hope that we might obtain very much useful information from the tests.

Yours sincerely,
