Re Continental Phantom. Sg{Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD}4/E/30.12.31

Referring to El/M28.12.31 and our conversation yesterday I confirm having agreed that the design work should be put in hand immediately for the SU.carburetters, induction pipes and control gear.

R's view as expressed to me is not quite as per the third paragraph of your memo., i.e. that, if we adopted the SU. on this model, then we ought to adopt it as standard, but was to the effect that if possible he would like to avoid using the SU. if only because we were proposing to use it on the B.E. as one of the means of making it different from a RR.

On the question of the Continental Phantom I understand you will discuss at Derby whether it would/not be best to conduct a bench test in order to satisfy ourselves that the engine will stand up to the increased HP, which was the main purpose of the proposed 10,000 mile road test; then if the engine is satisfactory from that point of view, a 10,000 mile test could be carried out with the carburetters, induction pipes, control gear etc. that we are proposing to standardise.

I should be glad/to hear what procedure has been decided on arising out of your discussion.

Sg.{Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD}
