| To DA. {Bernard Day - Chassis Design} from E. {Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} -2- E1/G24318 Contd. The first pair of webs and main bearings should be like those on the "Condor(Aero Engine)". The rear pair of webs and main bearings should also be like the Condor(Aero Engine). The crankshaft should have a loose tail similar to that shewn on our drawing of wheelcase and gears for the Condor(Aero Engine), or else similar to the existing Falcon(Aero Engine) tail. This tail should carry the Falcon(Aero Engine) crankshaft pinion spring drive, as indicated. We are actually using the Eagle(Aero Engine), but it will be necessary for you to use the Falcon(Aero Engine) for the sake of the wheelcase and gears. The milling of the crank webs near the crank pin should be a reproduction of the finished Condor(Aero Engine). With regard to the main bearing bolts, we have found it necessary to make some alteration. We are now turning them to studs with nuts on the bottom, the nuts being inserted in windows in the double webs, and screwed up therein. The distance from the face of the nut to the centre of the crank-shaft, measured vertically, is approximately 4". Would you kindly arrange similar studs on the "V" engine for the main bearings. Would you also arrange separate windows if possible, for the cylinder studs in the cross wall of the crankcase, as on the 12-cylinder design. A single carburettor will be required for each cylinder. With regard to the crankcase, we think it will be necessary to fit a valve as used on large motorcycle engines. W.E.H. 22/1/18.
