Lubricants for Bentley Car

C6/C19.9.33 - Our present arrangements with Messrs. Price and Wakefield cover the supply of Lubricants for Rolls-Royce Cars and Rolls-Royce Cars only, and expire December 31st.1933, i.e., we have a perfectly free hand as far as Lubricants for Bentley Cars are concerned.

The Experimental Shop report that :-

Price's ...... MOTORINE 'C'
Wakefield's ... CASTROL 'XL'
Vacuum Oil Co's MOBILOIL 'D'

have been tested out in the Bentley Cars, and all are satisfactory. They have tried out the Shell AEROSHELL in the 20/25 HP. Rolls Car, but so far not in the Bentley, and express the opinion that, seeing it was satisfactory in the 20/25 HP. Rolls, it would be equally satisfactory in the Bentley.

The Vacuum Oil Company, an American firm, offered bulk supplies of MOBILOIL 'D' for the Bentley Car, in consideration of our recommendation, at 1/7d per Gallon.

Our bulk price from Messrs. Price and Wakefield for their oils, jointly recommended, for the Roll-Royce Cars is ............................ 11d per Gallon and I have little doubt they would be only too pleased to offer a similar arrangement should they secure recommendation on the Bentley Car, but might object if we wished to include a third brand of Oil.

I therefore suggest, if it is decided to recommend the three oils jointly for the Bentley Car, that I approach Messrs. Price and Wakefield on the subject - also the Vacuum Oil Company (the latter with a view to revision of their figure) and let you know the result before a final decision is made.

As far as the public is concerned, the Retail prices of the three Oils are practically alike. To offset this, we should not secure such a big margin of profit on our re-sales of MOBILOIL 'D' i.e., the various lots sold to the Public through Conduit Street on the above basis prices.
