RA. 120H ALL TESTERS To all Officials and Superintendents. Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}2/T20.7.39. Use of private cars on Company's business. In many cases it is considerably cheaper to travel by rail than by private car. Furthermore, unless the insurance of the car definitely covers the use for business, it is illegal to use it for such purpose. It must be clearly understood that the Company will not meet any expenses claim in respect of the use of private cars on Company's business unless the permission of the Management has been obtained for the person concerned to use his car in this manner, and unless the Company is satisfied that the Insurance Policy covering the car is in order for business use. If these conditions are satisfied, expenses may be claimed at the rate of 2d per mile travelled on the Company's business. In cases where the supervisor considers that an employee is likely to use his car sufficiently often to justify it, the Company is prepared to pay any extra premium that may be involved in extending the policy of the car to cover business use, providing the cost does not exceed £4.10.0. It should be borne in mind however, that in the aggregate such premiums are quite costly, and can only be justified if it is expected that the employee will be required to use his car frequently.
