FROM DA{Bernard Day - Chassis Design}/EV.{Ivan Evernden - coachwork} C. to H.{Arthur M. Hanbury - Head Complaints} DY.{F R Danby} HS.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} ORIGINAL re. SHEET STEEL WING STAYS. Handwritten numbers: X8390 / Y1357 / X4555 X5390 We have been trying for over a year to get these in a condition fit for standardisation. For several years now all the experimental cars have had sheet metal wing stays with the lamps carried on the wings. We made these stays because the hand forged wrought iron stay such as are now used by the coachbuilders are inadequate on the 10,000 miles tests. We wish to carry the headlamps on the wings if possible as this represents a fairly considerable saving in weight. We think that there should be a recommended position for the headlamps on a R-R car, and that this should be given by a technical dept. We can however by variations of the bracket on the wing give a modification to the position of the lamp when the customer insists. We do not agree that the use of these sheet metal stays carrying the wing and lamp interferes in any way with supplying dippers, as Barker's supply dippers for the 20HP. Moreover we have our own dipping lamps which have been many ten thousand mile trips in France quite satisfactorily, and which we consider are much more of a R-R job than the very heavy unmechanical construction which we allow Barker's to fit. We would be glad if you would arrange between Derby and yourselves to settle upon a recommended position for the headlamps. We can then finally instruct the stays and brackets for both the new and the old Lucas lamps, and at the same time we can put through for standardisation our system of dippers. Whether or not for financial reasons you are able to make use of these new and improved features is not our business.
