1135 November 8th 1937. Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/FJH.{Fred J. Hardy - Chief Dev. Engineer}15/AP. The General Manager, The Ford Motor Company Ltd., Dagenham, ESSEX. Dear Sir, In September 1933 our Mr.Robotham visited your Works and you kindly gave him the benefit of your experience on engine timing gears in phenolic material, and mentioned that you have evolved a system of tests for material suitability. We are at present considering changing the material of our Phantom III. idler gear from standard Fabroil A.{Mr Adams} to fine mesh Fabroil A.{Mr Adams} in order to reduce wear of the Fabroil gear. Test results indicate that the fine mesh material wears at one third of the rate for the coarse mesh. The purpose of this letter is to ask you whether you could help us by subjecting samples of the Fabroil materials to your test and letting us have your comments on the results. We are sending to you under separate cover a sample block of fine mesh material and, for comparison, a section of a coarse mesh gear which has worn 0.020" on the pitch line in 20,000 miles. We should be very greatful if you could test these samples for us. Yours faithfully, FOR ROLLS-ROYCE LIMITED. | ||
