New PhantomCodename for PHANTOM I steering alterations.

Reference PN{Mr Northey}5/GM2726. Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/RM{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}1/LG7726 and telegrams of 10.7.26 on the above matter.

Last week one of the chassis in which the side steering tubes had been changed in London (No. 99-LC) was carefully examined and as nearly as could be determined with the measuring appliances available, both front and back pairs of springs in the side steering tube were compressed 5/8 of an inch. The springs had a nominal rating of 1500 lbs so that the initial loading of the springs would be 281 lbs, i.e. slightly under the 300 lbs which is understood to be the desired initial loading.

On test this car displayed to a somewhat lesser degree the features which were so disliked in 99-LC, the car which is specially referred to in PN{Mr Northey}5/GM2726. From a careful consideration of the impressions of these tests and the information given in Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/RM{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}1/LG7726 it would seem that all the impressions received could be attributed to a deficiency in the initial loading of the springs and in fact, that the symptoms are far more those of light initial loading than of a spring of low rating.

I think it is desirable that the means taken to determine the initial loading of these 1500 lbs springs in the cars altered in London should be most carefully studied to see whether there is not some possibility of error. Will you please go into this matter as it is of the utmost importance that, if any even slight alteration is necessary, it should be made before the cars are handed over to their owners.
