(4) Appearance.

A point which should be considered is the appearance of the alum sump as compared with one of pressed steel. It should also be noted that most British cars over £300, and most of the expensive Continental cars appear to have alum sumps. The use of pressed steel sumps may have an adverse effect on customers who are of an inquisitive turn of mind.

(5) General Conclusions.

Taking all the above points into consideration, however, it appears to us that the most practical scheme is to bring the crankcase down below the crankshaft centre line, and use a simple pan type sump in pressed steel, bolted all the way round, the design being arranged to bring it within the scope of our own large press. In this case, there seems very little doubt that in quantities of 1000 and over, a considerable saving will be effected by pressing.
