| X 9-21 Mr. G.W.Hancock, Hotel De France, Chateauroux(French test region), Indre, FRANCE. From Hs. {Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} Hs. {Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} 9/MJ.14.2.33. 19-EX. We want to make sure that we do not expect too much from the automatic dampers. At the moment, on our Continental cars we are fitting both hydraulic and Hartford shock absorbers. If the automatic dampers enable us to leave off the Hartford we shall have achieved quite a lot. The reports from Mr. Slater and Roberts in Paris indicate that this may be possible. As regards your request for lower rating springs we are not very hopeful of this because our experience has been that with low rating springs we have never been able to get sufficient control by dampers to make the car stable. There is a limit to what we can ask the dampers to do and if we go beyond that we shall simply pile up trouble upon ourselves with the dampers breaking up. If we can achieve a moderate improvement which enables us to do away with the Hartfords we shall have achieved something. We do not expect to reach heaven in one jump!
