This Allweather body, with Beatonson head, on sub-frame short Chassis with "D" column, was returned to Barkers on 18/6/26 for examination of your complaints with regard to coachwork, after having done approximately 9,000 miles, mostly in France. Mr. Munday and Mr. Penney of Barkers went for a short test run in company with Ev.{Ivan Evernden - coachwork} and MO. and on the 21/6/26 we had an opportunity of a full-dress post-mortem on the same, when I was present and Mr. Nutt. The result of this examination will no doubt have been reported to you by Ev.{Ivan Evernden - coachwork}, and Barkers hope to have the car returned to you within a week's time, and we hope to your satisfaction. Scuttle Flexibility: There is no doubt that owing to the scuttle isolation, the coachbuilders have not fully realised that a great deal of their sources of support has been withdrawn, and this has caused the difficulty which you complain of. The CSC. have had the question of a more rigid scuttle before them for some considerable time, and had been working with the coachbuilders to overcome the same. This has, we believe now been done in a satisfactory manner with the more recent cars. In my present Cabriolet (14-LK{L. King}), built in 1923, there is very little flexibility of the scuttle in evidence, probably due to the fact that there is a metal band across the same to support 2 oil lamps which I have fitted in addition to the electric small side lamps on my cars. This method is now dispensed with, but there is no doubt, and Barkers agree, that it greatly helps towards the rigidity of the scuttle. Messrs. Barkers have a new car for me in hand which we hope will be completed towards the end of July, and your system of fillet, as illustrated in a former letter, will be adopted with certain other modifications, so as to secure [STAMP: RECEIVED Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} 24 JUN 1926] | ||
