and this is confirmed in practice (see picture). Consequently under light brake applications, which is when squeaks occur, the pilot shoe tips will not touch atall.

Furthermore the tipping shoe on the wrapping shoe appears to be mechanically unsound as it will tend to wear so as to make itself ineffective. Hdy.{William Hardy} has gone into this question.

In view of these facts we cannot see what is to be gained by making the shoes of forged steel as suggested in your memo.
