GRY{Shadwell Grylls} x6644 328 To BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} and RHC{R. H. Coverley - Production Engineer} from HDY.{William Hardy} HDY.{William Hardy}1/HP.8.6.34. c. Wor{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager}-H.{Arthur M. Hanbury - Head Complaints} Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}-Ben. J.3. Gearbox in SpectreCodename for Phantom III. With reference to the layouts N. Sch's 4074/5, it will be seen that when studs are used to secure the gear lever bracket to the gearbox, it is not possible to remove the bracket when the box is in place. To overcome this difficulty we suggest the use of set screws in bushes in the box as shewn by N. Sch.4084, which we send herewith. A print of this drawing is attached to RHC{R. H. Coverley - Production Engineer}'s copy of this memo. Will RHC{R. H. Coverley - Production Engineer} kindly note that the stays for the propeller shaft end thrust at the sides of the box are deleted, but there is now a central stay which requires an angle bracket to be attached to the front end of the box as shewn on the layout drawings. The thickness of the wall of the box where this angle bracket is attached should be reduced as little as possible when obtaining a face for the bracket. We are expecting this box to have the reduced travel into 1st speed as asked for in Hdy.{William Hardy}2/HP.28.3.34, but the lightened 3rd motion shaft to N. Sch.4021 should not be fitted.
