Marles Steering on SpectreCodename for Phantom III.

The R.R. Marles steerings on SpectreCodename for Phantom IIIs II & III are not so good as the La{L. A. Archer} Salle steering on SpectreCodename for Phantom III I from the point of view of road shocks. We have noticed that the steerings on the Cadillac and SpectreCodename for Phantom III I have a definite amount of slack in the centre position, whereas the R.R. Marles gears are quite free from slack. Will you please measure the slack in SpectreCodename for Phantom III I steering in the centre position and reproduce the same amount in SpectreCodename for Phantom III III when this is reassembled; also, when you have measured the slack in SpectreCodename for Phantom III I will you please adjust this steering so that it has the least possible amount of slack consistent with freedom.

There is a further feature of our Marles gear which we suspect as a possible cause of its transmitting road shocks. The sides of the cam tracks are crowned to the extent of 0.005 according to the Adamant Co's drawings, and as shown on the attached print. We believe that this may be an excessive amount of crowning, and would be glad if you would dismantle the La{L. A. Archer} Salle gear on SpectreCodename for Phantom III I the next time the engine is removed from this chassis and let us know the extent of the crowning on this gear, and whether the bedding extends over the whole depth of the track.

We are very anxious to see the cam and roller of the steering on SpectreCodename for Phantom III II when itis dismantled.
