Re Front Axle Pivots. - X.168 J.{Mr Johnson W.M.} R.{Sir Henry Royce} We attach herewith 3 of Mr Haldenby's reports in connection with the above 10/6/13. experiment. The tests of F.2353 were instigated by Mr Wormald, the reason being that we wished to know how these compared with those that we are replacing. As a result of these and previous experiments we are not proposing to replace these pivots unless we hear to the contrary from either Mr Royce or Mr Johnson. With reference to F.2352/3, it will be remembered that Mr Hives reported on March 17th/13 :- "The result of this test seems to point that the present pivots are safe, when the car strikes a big obstacle the whole of the steering parts deflect and no one part is weak, and the first thing to go is the cross tube if it is the type which has a nut in to start with. The next thing is the bolt which holds the leaves together and which spigot the springs to the axle. This allows the front axle to be pushed back on to the springs." Mr Hives report of April 2nd/13 giving a long tabulated comparison between the pivots we are replacing shows that the latter are stronger than the older-type. | ||
