In our opinion one of the objections to the gassing indicator, even if it could be made to be permanently reliable, is the fact that it does not eliminate the human element. We consider that a device which is entirely automatic in its action would have the greater appear to most owners and drivers. Such an indicator depends for its action upon the air-tightness of the cell and sometimes the sealing compound becomes cracked which would stop the indicator working. We are making some simple experiments of such an indicator on a battery on the bench.

As previously reported we have the auto-switch for reducing the rate of charge running on one of each of two experimental chassis - 40/50 HP. and 20 HP. The slight change of connection referred to in our EFC4/T28.1.27 was made on these two at the time reported, and recently observations have been made of exact operation of these switches on the road. In our EFC4/T28.1.27 we referred to the possibility of doing away with the charging switch when such an auto switch is used, as is done in the Midgley system. We have since formed the opinion that the charging switch should not be deleted, one good reason being that it makes us dependent on the correct action of the cutout to break the circuit. However, with an auto-switch the charging switch could be
