TO HS.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} FROM E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} SECRET. E1/M30. 3. 25. E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} A.{Mr Adams} C. re. THROTTLE GOVERNOR. X8140 28.3.25. In reply to the 1st. part of your memo HS{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}3/LG which I read this morning on returning to the office I sent the following telegram:- "Throttle governor spring re.HS{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}3/LG "28.3.25. propose spring inside hollow "governor spindle sending particulars." I saw the compression spring as shewn on Lec. 2034. sketched in the drawing office at Derby and fear that I assumed it operated in the right direction without questioning the point. We can however easily apply a simple compression spring operating in the right direction within the governor spindle itself as shewn on Lec. 2041. It is not absolutely necessary to alter existing governors to do this but future work could be made to provide spigots for this spring at each end. With regard to the 2nd. part of your memo., we should like to know what strength of spring you have on the anti-rattling device for the generator drive. We finally asked for 18 lbs. At this point but we should be glad if you would make an experiment with still stronger springs by cutting off the rear end of the shaft which projects beyond the nut and fitting springs into the space thereby provided. We suggest you should try springs of 40 lbs. 50 lbs. and 80 lbs. The latter could be obtained by 2 working coils of .128 wire. We have received Mr. Royce's comments on the drawing submitted of this drive and he suggests that the frictional sphere should be formed on the end of the nut which fixes the dynamo drive wheel to the shaft. We shall send you a drawing shewing this modification tomorrow together with means for fitting a stronger spring to overcome fabric coupling. We should like to have your view as to what pressure is necessary to ensure that the fabric coupling will not cause trouble on this dynamo drive. E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} [Signature] | ||
