- 2 - There is one point, however, I think we may have to study; that is under vapor conditions but here we want the shutters to close at a higher temperature. Some days we have had a fair degree of frost and in the traffic from the works to town, the water drops to a low temperature and we get very little heat from the exhaust when idling with the present scheme of automatic heating. Therefore, the acceleration suffers. I am sure in winter weather there will be a demand for average higher temperature. To sum up the position here at the moment, the officials at Springfield are very pleased with CS-17 car except for the springing. There is a difference of opinion on the question of springing. Mr. Beaver claims that the car is not so well sprung as their standard cars. I have told them that before I can accept that I shall need to be convinced by the trial of producing a car of a similar type which gives a better ride. Although it is open to question as regards the relative merits of the Thomas-X car and the Springfield car as regards riding, there is no question whatever that for both countries, we have got to do all we can to give a better ride.
