| 25-EX. CHASSIS (AFTER 30,000 MILES TEST) FRONT AXLE AND BRAKES Pivot pins in fairly good condition. All actuating shaft bearings dry and corroded due to Bijur plugs having failed. The felt gauze in the plates had become soft and was forced through the mesh of the copper gauze. Brake Drums(45-54% CARBON STEEL) - Worn .040" on diameter. Cross Steering Tube - Ball pads were all badly grooved. Front Axle Control Damper Bkts - Contact pieces badly grooved, apparently due to lack of oil. REAR AXLE AND BRAKES Condition of axle gears good. Oil supply to brake gear etc. poor, several Bijur plugs having failed. The oil pipe and connection to shock absorber ball end pin appear to be exposed to flying stones, the alum. washer being eaten through and the connection badly distorted. Brake Drums(45-54% Carbon Steel) - Worn approximately .050" on diameter. Ferodo linings - Originally 3/8" were worn down to .125". A quantity of axle oil was found in the O.S. rear hub. FRONT SPRINGS AND FITTINGS Springs well lubricated and in good condition except for rear end of R.H. spring. This was due to oil not flowing along groove in shackle pin. No appreciable wear on shackle pins. -continued- | ||
