Dear Sirs,

For the attention of Major Searight.

With reference to your letter of the 15th. instant. We are sending you under separate cover the faded liquid of a number of our gauges as requested. We note what you say about the glass which withstands the penetration of the ultra-violet rays, and we will test this in one of our cars. We should like to emphasize, however, that up till recently the liquid in our gauge heads has retained its colour very well, and it is only since the adoption of the fuse glass with the top gland that we have had cases where the liquid has completely lost its colour in less than six months. On the other hand it is apparent that sun-light does have an effect on the problem because our worst sample is a car which has spent the winter on the Riviera. The other piece of evidence we can give you is that we have had some chassis standing in a very light shop without bodies on for seven or eight weeks, a thing that rarely happens, and on these chassis we have had four or five cases of complete fading.

[Struck through text: We hope by now that you have received the tank that we sent off last week on the 14th and are able to let us have the single fine petrol gauge.]

Yours faithfully,

For Rolls-Royce Ltd.
