206 To By.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} c. to E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} c. to Ds. Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/AFM.{Anthony F. Martindale}33/JH. 26.10.36. Bentley Brakes. The last quarterly Complaint sheet shows that on the last 6 months there have been :- 9 complaints of Front Brakes being fierce. 69 " " Brakes being inefficient. 67 " " Brakes pulling to one side. 141 " " Front brakes squeaking. 181 " " Rear " " These complaints are all made worse, even if they are not caused, by the Brakes running too hot. Some time ago we nearly standardised the Front drum GB.2174 which has slightly increased rib height, and therefore runs cooler, but the judder position made it unadvisable to do so then; but as N.Sch. 4665 is coming on production at the 51st chassis in J series, in a few weeks time, this can now be done, and we are going to issue a sheet. This drum is machined from existing castings. We should like the rib height of the rear brake drums of Bentley and 20/25 to be increased as much as the present castings will permit. Will you please find out if these can be increased the same amount as the front drums quoted, as if so, prepare the drawings so that a sheet can be issued. Aluminium drums, when we can standardise them, will be much more efficacious in curing these complaints. Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/A.F.Martindale. | ||
