on Phantom cars and know how to remedy it.

SHOCK ABSORBERS.

The cases and levers of the front shock absorbers were not strong enough. We have broken two in France. Designs have been issued for the necessary strengthening which shews considerable improvement on the bump test. It may require a little more development to be perfectly satisfactory.

FABRIC COUPLINGS.

We have altered the method of holding the fabric coupling on the SS.{S. Smith} This has not proved satisfactory in France. The size of the fabric coupling is the same as we at present use on the Phantom and we can therefore always revert to our present standard method of holding it. Alternatively we propose to do away with the fabric coupling altogether and substitute a universal joint such as we have in the clutch.

STARTER MOTOR.

This is being re-designed by WW. So far it has not proved reliable. We cannot see why this cannot be got right in the next month or two.

JELLYING OF FRONT END.

We have proved by recent experiments that we can satisfactorily overcome this with the right type of engine mounting.

Summarising the position :

The work we have already done on the SS.{S. Smith} car encourages us to believe that it will be a very much easier proposition to get right than we originally anticipated. In addition to better suspension and appearance, we think we are going to get greatly improved performance, increased body life, and better steering. (HS{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Ru.)
