γ 828 To HPS.{Horace Percy Smith - Experimental Factory Mgr} from Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/Gry.{Shadwell Grylls} Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/Gry.{Shadwell Grylls}9/MH.{M. Huckerby}5.7.38. 1.B.50 GEARBOX. The modifications to PD.128 just fitted to this gearbox do not prevent the gears coming out of mesh. We now, therefore, want to try a third and fourth sliding piece made to GB.3907 which we send you herewith. It will be necessary to use the new shaft and coupling destined for the third gearbox. Before the modification is carried out we want to run the pieces made to the original drawings to make sure that they jump out of gear. For test (1), therefore, the sliding piece should be to GB.3402 and the same piece to be subsequently modified to GB.3907. During the first test we want to omit on top and overdrive the springs and balls of the synchromesh mechanism. The pins, thrust plates and cones should be refitted to the box. The original weaker locating springs should again be refitted, stronger ones having been put in by the Garage. The reverse bush should be white-metalled and given 3 1/2 thou. clearance.
