Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} From. G.W.H/HFH.{Hoppy F. Hamilton} B. 56. BN.{W.O. Bentley / Mr Barrington} - BENTLEY. Confirming our telegram of date. In order to carry out minor repairs to the oil filter, it was necessary to drain the oil and in doing so, we discovered small particles of Hall's metal. We therefore removed the sump and found that No 2 big end was very slack. On further dismantling, we found that the metal on the two shims had completely broken away, leaving only the steel portion to form a distance piece between the linings. Evidently this caused the upper and lower linings to give and work loose and knock, this was the noise we heard. Continual hammering has caused the linings to splay out sideways and there is now a good deal of end movement in both halves. The piston which we at first suspected is in perfect order. We enclose sketch illustrating the damage done. ---------------- G.W.H./H.Hamilton. H.{Arthur M. Hanbury - Head Complaints} Hamilton | ||
