To EJJ/JV. Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Ed.{J. L. Edwards}14/JH.31.7.36: x11-9 560 c.c. Rudge Unit. When we recently visited Messrs. Rudge Whitworth Ltd. special note was taken of this engine mountings, sketches of which are attached. This consists of two side plates, one of which is dowelled and bolted to the side pillar, and the other is held in position by means of a central pinch bolt, and a distance piece. This latter plate - triangular in form - is grooved as shown, so that by slacking off the pinch bolt it may be moved outward and slid sideways and the engine removed. As will be seen this mounting is considerably more flexible than ours, and there is no doubt that the unit ran with no more vibration than one would expect from such an engine. Another point was that Hardy fabrics about half the size of ours could be made to last over 100 hours whereas our large ones do well at 10 hours. We should be glad therefore if you would scheme out a mounting similar to the above and put this in hand to be in readiness for rigging up the unit when it is placed on 31b bed.
