R.R. 235A (100 T) (S.H. 798, 10-12-20) G.{Mr Griffiths - Chief Accountant / Mr Gnapp} 2947 Handwritten: at Le C.R. Stamped: ORIGINAL Handwritten: PER I ENGINE TO Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} from E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} c. to C.J. c. to W&R.{Sir Henry Royce} E4/M17.3.22. RE PEREGRINE ENGINE. Handwritten: X4539 With regard to the Peregrine engine, the proportions of the crankshaft have now been very carefully investigated, and it is hoped soon to send particulars of this to Derby, together with con rod piston etc. With regard to the crankcase this is made like Goshawk 1. that is to say, we have adopted the best form of crank-case that we know of. It is less inconvenient on the Peregrine engine than on any other because there are only 3 main bearings. It has another advantage insofar that it provides us with an oil sump or tray which we can take down and thoroughly clean. The removal of this tray is a much simpler job than taking down the lower half of the more conventional type of engine if it were desired to clean out the crankcase. This question of crankcase design was unsettled before Mr. Royce left for Le CanadelHenry Royce's French residence, and we should be glad if you could obtain his sanction to having the main bearing caps solid with the lower half.
