86000 Expl. Dept. Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Wst.12/MJ. 8th. November, 1935. The Secretary, Air Ministry, Adastral House, Kingsway, LONDON.W.C.2. For the attention of R.D.E.3. Dear Sir, Replying to your letter of the 7th.inst., we have examined the question of the fitting of Lodge integral screened plugs to our engines and our comments are as follow :- Kestrel Unsupercharged. They will not fit in the two end plugs in the Vee due to fouling the carburetter mixture control. When fitted to the exhaust side they project .500" longer than the K.L.G. MSR. and for this reason alone they are undesirable as they virtually increase the width of the engine 1". Kestrel Supercharged. The same remarks as above apply to the exhaust plugs on this engine. There is no difficulty in accomodating these plugs in the Vee. Merlin C. & E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} The type X.488 is quite interchangeable with the K.L.G. MS.4F but is quite unsuitable for the inlet plugs on the E engine which require a special terminal fitting. We have designed a suitable fitting for this purpose a drawing of which was shewn to Dr. Bairsto of the R.A.E. last week. cont'd........... | ||
