Messrs. Rolls-Royce Ltd.,
DERBY.

Dear Sirs,

We thank you for your letter of the 11th inst. regarding the modified magneto which Mr. North brought to your works on that date.

We are pleased to note that the improvement is sufficient to enable you to give us instructions to fit the sleeves in future magnetos in the same way, and we are proceeding with the manufacture of magnetos in accordance with the sample machine submitted by Mr. North.

The question of altering the existing magnetos is a difficult one as the modifications are such as can only be made during the process of manufacture, and modification in the ordinary sense of the word is impossible.

The only solution so far as existing magnetos are concerned is to manufacture new machines, and use in assembling these machines the parts of the existing ones which are not affected by the modification, that is to say, the armatures, contact breakers, distributor wheels and bearings, distributor blocks, magnets etc.,

The manufacture of magnetos with sleeves fitted as this sample will be appreciably more expensive than manufacture by present methods and we would suggest that the whole matter be dealt with by placing with us a further order bringing the total number of magnetos to be delivered including the balance of the existing order, to 400 at £10.10.0d. each, this price to cover both the new order and the balance
