To Wor.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} from Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} +294 HS{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}18/KW.11.4.35. Replying to Wor.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager}7/R.9.4.35. SpectreCodename for Phantom III. We have circulated a brief resume of the present SpectreCodename for Phantom III position, reference Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}17/KW.11.4.35, which deals with this point. Phantom. We went to Barkers and had a look at the noise insulation scheme which they are fitting up on the Phantom. They are carrying out the work satisfactorily. Presumably the car has not yet been on the road. We have been to Park Wards with a view to coming to some mutual agreement as to the best materials to use on the noise insulation. Various materials are being tried out and the job should be stabilised very shortly. In the meantime, JLE.{J. Lee Evans - Chassis Test Manager} has appointed one of his staff to educate London Coachbuilders. Bentley. 5-B-IV has now started its 10,000 miles test. Unfortunately a fan blade has come off and damaged the radiator. A replacement was despatched on the 11th. We have put in hand some experimental tests to determine what part of the fan fails. We think that all fans will have to be changed on cars running on the Continent. With regard to the dynamo, this is going to France on 21-C-IV. Supercharging the Bentley. We have continued our bench tests and find that so far we cannot get good results with a supercharger on the same side of the engine as the induction pipe. The best set-up so far has been with the supercharger on the exhaust side and a pipe running across the engine. This is the Graham arrangement. In view of these results the scheme designed for the blower on the Bentley is being revised by E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} The American gears have not arrived. We have, however, decided to wait no longer for them, but to put the supercharger on the road with English cut gears. These will be very noisy. The engine with the super-charger is at present being finally assembled for fitting to Bentley 1 car. | ||
