(1) The 'Y' metal pistons which have turned out too flexible I fear cannot be cured, because even if we fit light steel rings inside they will still be flabby - i.e. bind in at one place, and out at others.

(2) E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} is sending a new design for a 'Y' metal one for trial.

(3) Apparently we must trust to our old friend the cast one, slightly improved in dimensions, a drawing of which we are sending.

(4) You will notice that I have asked for all four rings to be pinned because for good slow running we must have gas-tight pistons, and should the joints get opposite we might as well not fit so many rings, except for carrying away the heat.

You will notice that with the suggested piston in item (2), 4 splits do not cut off the heat flow. Though we have added some weight we have also saved some, and though costly, etc., it might be profitable if we could quickly fit pistons that were always really silent - (i.e. more straight-forward production of high class work).
