1262. To Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/Gry.{Shadwell Grylls} from HPS{Horace Percy Smith - Experimental Factory Mgr}/Bl. FSH HPS{Horace Percy Smith - Experimental Factory Mgr}/Bl.1/IG.3.7.39. PROPELLOR SHAFT CENTRE BEARING. G.C.D. 247. Herewith a brief review of the condition of the propellor shaft centre bearing G.C.D. 247., after 90 hours at 4,000 R.P.M. on test rig. Although the bearing was still comparatively free, it had tightened up slightly during the test, whereas the new Departure bearing, which was run in parallel with it, was still as free as at the beginning of the test. When removed from the rig the "Acme" threads and the cover plates were full of lubricant. When stripped there was apparently still sufficient lubricant retained to maintain lubrication but it was changed from its original nature to a more liquid state. Presuming the bearing to have been completely filled initially, the estimated loss in volume was approximately 50%. When cleaned, the inner race moved freely in relation to the outer race but the cage was "patchy". --------------- HPS{Horace Percy Smith - Experimental Factory Mgr}/Bl. N. Bell | ||
