To Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} from A.B.Roberts. 600a August 2nd.1937 DELIVERY OF 26.G.Vl.{V. Lewis / Mr Valentine} TO CHATEAUROUX. The general running of the car was good, and no trouble was experienced during the run. ENGINE No change in the various periods which had been noted in Derby took place during the run. The engine was free to float on the raised rubber mounting due to the torque arm working loose on its mounting. This is receiving the attention of the Design Dept. No petrol starvation or vapour lock took place on the A.C. pump or with the A.C. and S.U. pumps together. Carburation generally was good, slow running and idling very good. Petrol cons. for the whole trip was 11.4 M.P.G. with an average speed of 45 M.P.H. This sounds rather heavy, but is just about the same as 22.G.V. in France for similar average speeds. No detonation or pre-ignition was noticed and no misfires on pick-up. Oil pressure was steady between 20-30 lbs. over the whole speed range and no loss of pressure with heavy braking. Bad oil leak from the clutch pit and also from the back of the cyl. block. Oil temperature cruising 80°C. and max. oil temperature noted was 102°C with an air temperature of 28°C. Tappets were fairly quiet in the driver's seat. No.7. valve spring was found to be broken on inspection at Chateauroux. Engine gear rattle was unpleasant, when running light with a hot engine. Clutch showed no signs of slip during the run. During the inspection at Chateauroux the clutch casing was moist with oil so this may account for the slip experienced by I.M.Waller. The pedal position is rather high and I found it rather tiring in London traffic. GEARBOX change speed very good. Occasional false engagement of 2nd. gear when stationary. Top gear came out three times to Folkstone but not afterwards. The continuous gears are noisy on the overrun, the box being quiet otherwise. BRAKES Effective and light in operation. High pitched squeak with light application from all brakes. continued | ||
