RE GOSHAWK CRACKED CYLINDER HEAD. Y4225 X1751

I can see now how the stress due to unequal heat and expansion cracks the jacket, but I cannot see how it cracks the valve face after the cooling water fails. The bends and boss heated by the exhaust expand, and the jacket which is very near to them is stressed in tension, and cracks longitudinally.

Try to reproduce the crack so that you can tell if we make the required modification necessary to make this unlikely to occur.

The following alterations should be tried:-
(1) Cut a hole in the jacket and fit a cover.

Never mind if loss of water causes a leak - the joint could easily be remade.
(2) Bring out that part of the jacket near the exhaust bends so that it is further away, and has more flexibility to allow for the expansion without a fracture.
